Activiteca is a center of educational materials and services in Honduras.Fractions at Club Activiteca / Fracciones

Activiteca's mission is two fold:

  1. To enable Honduran teachers to use high-quality learning materials that are otherwise unavailable.
  2. To offer direct educational experiences to the public.
Activiteca functions as a lending library (primarily of non-book objects and equipment, but also of books) to schools, along with teacher training. It also acts as an interactive museum for the public, using the materials in activities featured daily. There are 8 subject areas of materials.

The methods demonstrated in Activiteca programs are examples of interactive, discovery-oriented processes using concrete objects and actions, rather than simply words or symbols. People from all walks of life can come to Activiteca events and have entertaining and effective learning experiences, without signing up for classes. Activiteca is promoting this form of learning to teachers in the public schools, by allowing them to observe and participate in the public activities, and also by making available to them the loan of the materials combined with the necessary training, and the follow-up to help them become at ease and successful with these methods. In their training sessions, teachers will learn not only how to operate the science equipment or play the math game, but also how to manage the students as they work in small groups, not just as the whole class.

Activiteca's goal is not simply to have a direct influence on the public schools in its immediate area of the center, and possibly the nearby villages, although this is already a big challenge. Activiteca can reach much farther, because the design of Activiteca can be replicated in any community of Honduras that wants to meet the conditions. These are: An adequate space permanently dedicated to the Activiteca programs, a non-governmental, non-profit organization to assume responsibility for it, while decicated to continuing the double commitment to the public and to the teachers, and a qualified person to be trained as director. We can help the organizeres by letting the director train in our center in San Pedro Sula, and if we certify the center for using the name "Actviteca," they can participate in our network of funding and donations of materials.
